How Klaveness Dry Bulk turns questions into impact

Klaveness cross-collaboration in Singapore

In a sector as dynamic as shipping, curiosity is often the spark that drives meaningful innovation. For Klaveness Dry Bulk (KDB), curiosity, one of the four company values within the Klaveness Group, has evolved into a practical approach shaping how teams collaborate, explore solutions, and challenge long-held assumptions.

“At its heart, curiosity for us is not simply about generating ideas. It’s about being open to new perspectives, enabling conversations, and then translating those insights into tangible value for our customers,” says Michael Jørgensen, EVP of KDB.

Rethinking freight conversations

One example of curiosity in practice is KDB’s approach to hosting dedicated customer workshops, which invites teams to step back and re-examine the freight decision-making process. Rather than defaulting to presentations or pre-conceived notions, these interactive sessions are structured to encourage open dialogue and collaborative thinking.

Jørgensen says participants are invited to examine the full lifecycle of freight decisions from early-stage planning and documentation to freight structures and the financial impact of decision-making: “The format allows for the kinds of questions and deep dive that don’t always make it into a typical commercial meeting.”

By creating a focused space for curiosity both internally and externally, these sessions are not only creating stronger relationships with customers; but also enabling smarter, more aligned decisions over time.

From questions to tools

Curiosity also plays a central role in how KDB develops tools to support freight decision-making. BulkView is their internal innovation sandbox—a hands-on environment where ideas are explored, tested, and brought to life. Focused on creating simple, intuitive solutions, it has become a cross-functional playground for experimentation.

Among the tools developed, Trading Optimizer is the most concrete example of putting data and internal knowledge into action. “It’s designed to challenge traditional thinking by helping users better understand market dynamics and the psychology behind counterpart decisions,” explains Jørgensen.

Paired with Pre-Vetting—a Klaveness Digital tool originally pioneered by KDB—and expertise of the chartering team, it helps predict the likelihood of a specific vessel being sought after, allowing strategies to be adjusted accordingly.

This kind of iterative development of testing, improving, and scaling is built into the Klaveness culture through an innovation engine driven by Klaveness Digital (see: Curiosity in Action from Klaveness Digital). When an idea shows value beyond a single use case, it moves through a structured process to further development and, when relevant, commercialized to ensure that the most impactful solutions can benefit the wider industry.

A culture shaped by curiosity

What’s striking across these initiatives is how embedded curiosity has become in everyday operations. It’s not treated as a standalone innovation program or an occasional brainstorm. Instead, it functions as a continuous habit built into conversations, decisions, and cross-functional collaboration.

Across operations globally, KDB teams are consistently encouraged to pause, question, and explore. That mindset is helping to surface not only better ideas, but better ways of executing them.
