Strengthening our presence in Japan with a “glocal” mindset

As part of Klaveness’ continued growth in Asia, we are pleased to have strengthened our presence in Japan with Junji Aratani joining as Chartering Manager alongside General Manager Haruki Chua. Junji’s arrival doubles our ‘on-the-ground’ team in Tokyo as we seek to build a stronger, more connected base in the Pacific region.

For the team, the focus is on developing a glocal mindset that blends our global vision of improving the nature of shipping with a deep respect for how business is done locally. “Our goal is not to simply be a sales and support office,” says Haruki. “We want our Japan office to be a key trading hub alongside Singapore, combining global reach with local knowledge to serve our customers better.”

Joining Klaveness Japan, Junji brings valuable experience from his years in grain trading at Marubeni Corporation, where he was a regular customer of Klaveness. “When the opportunity came to join Klaveness, I knew it was the right fit, a place where I could grow and help expand our reach in Japan,” he says.

With a key focus on deepening relationships and strengthening trust, Junji sees consistency and communication as essential to success. “The Japan market is unique. Charterers look closely at post-fixture performance, so daily follow-up and reliability really matter. Even when there is no active business, staying connected and sharing insights is important.”

With big ambitions ahead, the team at Klaveness Japan looks forward to building on its role as a trusted, insight-driven partner that combines global expertise with local understanding to create lasting value across the Pacific region.
