About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Port Captain to work with our Operations team. You will be based in Australia – preferably Western Australia.

In close collaboration with the Head of Commercial Operations, the Port Captain will provide on-the-ground operational support to Masters, Officers, and Crew.

As a Port Captain, you will participate in KCC’s follow-up of vessel performance together with Klaveness Ship Management (KSM), a division of OSM Thome, to ensure that KCC vessels achieve optimal port performance, maintain the highest safety standards, and comply with both local and international regulations. You will furthermore support KCC’s business development in Australia.

Working closely with KSM in their capacity as DOC holder for the vessels, you will also contribute to maintaining the integrity of and compliance with the Safety Management System.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide operational oversight and support during Australian port calls to ensure safe and efficient operations.

  • Liaise with Port Authorities, Terminals, Agents, and local Service Providers in the Ship/Shore interface to resolve issues and optimize vessel turnaround.

  • Perform vessel inspections, safety audits, and support vetting inspections in line with KSM’s QMS and ‘Always Safe and Secure’ standards.

  • Collaborate with the KSM QA and Technical departments to ensure compliance with operational and safety procedures.

  • Assist in the implementation of KCC’s sustainability and emissions reduction initiatives within the Australian region.

  • Provide structured feedback and reports on port performance, safety observations, and improvement opportunities.

  • Conduct practical condition assessments covering safety, structural integrity, equipment condition, housekeeping, and operational readiness, and recommend appropriate improvement actions.

  • Verify the effectiveness and sustainability of corrective actions and improvement measures, contributing to KCC’s follow-up of KSM and overall fleet performance.

  • Act as a liaison for KCC’s Customers, Charterers, and Partners during port operations in Australia.

  • Contribute to KCC’s business development in Australia with responsibility for port access of current and new vessel types.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Australian citizen or hold a valid permanent working right in Australia.

  • Extensive knowledge of Australian port operations, regulations, Port State Control and HSEQ standards.

  • Seagoing experience as a Senior Officer on tankers and ideally also on dry bulk vessels.

  • Strong, practical problem-solving and influencing skills with a proactive approach.

  • Proven understanding of commercial operations, chartering, and vetting requirements.

  • Experience with the SIRE 2.0 and Rightship vetting processes.

  • Hold, or be capable of obtaining, relevant Auditor qualifications relevant to ISM, ISPS, and MLC Conventions.

  • Excellent communication skills across multiple Stakeholders and the ability to represent KCC professionally.

Commercial Engagement

Klaveness Combination Carriers ASA (KCC) is incorporated in Norway with head office in Oslo.  This role is offered as a long-term engagement as an independent contractor with terms and structure to be mutually agreed in full alignment with Australian regulations.
